Cat in Inktense pencils

by Eliza Leahy

This is a demonstration of how I created a picture of my Cat "Licorice Allsorts" using Derwent Inktense pencils on Saunders watercolor paper. Click on the pictures and a larger version will open in a new window.

First I draw the picture using one of the colors I plan to use in the picture. In this case I've used a green that will be in the shadows. I draw the outline, and sketch a little bit of the darker areas in.

I start with the eyes, using the basic eye color and a few little touches of the other colors that make up the eyes.

This is where Inktense is different from other pencils, even watercolor pencils. When you add water the color not only blends but it intensifies, giving an appearence not totally unlike ink. (not, however, as much as the hype promises). There is a pencil in the set called "outliner" which is not watersoluble. Once you have wet an color of Inktense and it has dried it is stable and won't spread again if wet, allowing you to sketch over and build up layers.
